Emotions Essay -- essays research papers
Emotions No matter how hard you try, you cannot control your emotions, only attempt to hide them. Emotions influence every aspect of our lives, what we do, what we say, and et cetera. All of our emotions, from anger to insecurity, are influenced by several factors, just as our lives are influenced by our emotions (Gelinas, Emotions 35). First of all, it causes problems when one does not trust himself, and it shows up in many ways. Some people brag to call attention to themselves, causing others to believe that the egoistic person has a lot of self-respect. Very often though, egotism can be an attempt to cover up insecurity in a person who does not feel they will be good enough without it (Gelinas, Emotions 36). Bragging about oneââ¬â¢s achievements, material possessions, or achievements reveals a sense of inferiority. Even though one may brag their whole lives, they never reach a sense of well being. This is caused by fixation, which is when a person does not grow emotionally after a certain point (Gelinas, Emotions 64). A person that brags a great deal may also be considered a snob. A snob may not act as a braggart for the same reasons egoistic people do, for what snobs do is act so that they end up isolating themselves. They do this to avoid the trouble of friends, responsibilities, and emotional relationships by giving a snobbish attitude to the people who put up with these things (Gelinas, Emotions 45). The Twilight Saga 4: Breaking Dawn 4. GESTURE
The wedding flowed into the reception party smoothly ââ¬â proof of Alice's flawless planning. It was just twilight over the river; the ceremony had lasted exactly the right amount of time, allowing the sun to set behind the trees. The lights in the trees glimmered as Edward led me through the glass back doors, making the white flowers glow. There were another ten thousand flowers out here, serving as a fragrant, airy tent over the dance floor set up on the grass under two of the ancient cedars. Things slowed down, relaxed as the mellow August evening surrounded us. The little crowd spread out under the soft shine of the twinkle lights, and we were greeted again by the friends we'd just embraced. There was time to talk now, to laugh. ââ¬Å"Congrats, guys,â⬠Seth Clearwater told us, ducking his head under the edge of a flower garland. His mother, Sue, was tight by his side, eyeing the guests with wary intensity. Her face was thin and fierce, an expression that was accented by her short, severe hairstyle; it was as short as her daughter Leah's ââ¬â I wondered if she'd cut it the same way in a show of solidarity. Billy Black, on Seth's other side, was not as tense as Sue. When I looked at Jacob's father, I always felt like I was seeing two people rather than just one. There was the old man in the wheelchair with the lined face and the white smile that everyone else saw. And then there was the direct descendant of a long line of powerful, magical chieftains, cloaked in the authority he'd been born with. Though the magic had ââ¬â in the absence of a catalyst ââ¬â skipped his generation, Billy was still a part of the power and the legend. It flowed straight through him. It flowed to his son, the heir to the magic, who had turned his back on it. That left Sam Uley to act as the chief of legends and magic now___ Billy seemed oddly at ease considering the company and the event ââ¬â his black eyes sparkled like he'd just gotten some good news. I was impressed by his composure. This wedding must have seemed a very bad thing, the worst thing that could happen to his best friend's daughter, in Billy's eyes. I knew it wasn't easy for him to restrain his feelings, considering the challenge this event foreshadowed to the ancient treaty between the Cullens and the Quileutes ââ¬â the treaty that prohibited the Cullens from ever creating another vampire. The wolves knew a breach was coming, but the Cullens had no idea how they would react. Before the alliance, it would have meant an immediate attack. A war. But now that they knew each other better, would there be forgiveness instead? As if in response to that thought, Seth leaned toward Edward, arms extended. Edward returned the hug with his free arm. I saw Sue shudder delicately. ââ¬Å"It's good to see things work out for you, man,â⬠Seth said. ââ¬Å"I'm happy for you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thank you, Seth. That means a lot to me.â⬠Edward pulled away from Seth and looked at Sue and Billy. ââ¬Å"Thank you, as well. For letting Seth come. For supporting Bella today.â⬠ââ¬Å"You're welcome,â⬠Billy said in his deep, gravelly voice, and I was surprised at the optimism in his tone. Perhaps a stronger truce was on the horizon. A bit of a line was forming, so Seth waved goodbye and wheeled Billy toward the food. Sue kept one hand on each of them. Angela and Ben were the next to claim us, followed by Angela's parents and then Mike and Jessica ââ¬â who were, to my surprise, holding hands. I hadn't heard that they were together again. That was nice. Behind my human friends were my new cousins-in-law, the Denali vampire clan. I realized I was holding my breath as the vampire in front ââ¬â Tanya, I assumed from the strawberry tint in her blond curls ââ¬â reached out to embrace Edward. Next to her, three other vampires with golden eyes stared at me with open curiosity. One woman had long, pale blond hair, straight as corn silk. The other woman and the man beside her were both black-haired, with a hint of an olive tone to their chalky complexions. And they were all four so beautiful that it made my stomach hurt. Tanya was still holding Edward. ââ¬Å"Ah, Edward,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"I've missed you.â⬠Edward chuckled and deftly maneuvered out of the hug, placing his hand lightly on her shoulder and stepping back, as if to get a better look at her. ââ¬Å"It's been too long, Tanya. You look well.â⬠ââ¬Å"So do you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Let me introduce you to my wife.â⬠It was the first time Edward had said that word since it was officially true; he seemed like he would explode with satisfaction saying it now. The Denalis all laughed lightly in response. ââ¬Å"Tanya, this is my Bella.â⬠Tanya was every bit as lovely as my worst nightmares had predicted. She eyed me with a look that was much more speculative than it was resigned, and then reached out to take my hand. ââ¬Å"Welcome to the family, Bella.â⬠She smiled, a little rueful. ââ¬Å"We consider ourselves Carlisle's extended family, and I am sorry about the, er, recent incident when we did not behave as such. We should have met you sooner. Can you forgive us?â⬠ââ¬Å"Of course,â⬠I said breathlessly. ââ¬Å"It's so nice to meet you.â⬠ââ¬Å"The Cullens are all evened up in numbers now. Perhaps it will be our turn next, eh, Kate?â⬠She grinned at the blonde. ââ¬Å"Keep the dream alive,â⬠Kate said with a roll of her golden eyes. She took my hand from Tanya's and squeezed it gently. ââ¬Å"Welcome, Bella.â⬠The dark-haired woman put her hand on top of Kate's. ââ¬Å"I'm Carmen, this is Eleazar. We're all so very pleased to finally meet you.â⬠ââ¬Å"M-me, too,â⬠I stuttered. Tanya glanced at the people waiting behind her ââ¬â Charlie's deputy, Mark, and his wife. Their eyes were huge as they took in the Denali clan. ââ¬Å"We'll get to know each other later. We'll have eons of time for that!â⬠Tanya laughed as she and her family moved on. All the standard traditions were kept. I was blinded by flashbulbs as we held the knife over a spectacular cake ââ¬â too grand, I thought, for our relatively intimate group of friends and family. We took turns shoving cake in each other's faces; Edward manfully swallowed his portion as I watched in disbelief. I threw my bouquet with atypical skill, right into Angela's surprised hands. Emmett and Jasper howled with laughter at my blush while Edward removed my borrowed garter ââ¬â which I'd shimmied down nearly to my ankle ââ¬â verycarefully with his teeth. With a quick wink at me, he shot it straight into Mike Newton's face. And when the music started, Edward pulled me into his arms for the customary first dance; I went willingly, despite my fear of dancing ââ¬â especially dancing in front of an audience ââ¬â just happy to have him holding me. He did all the work, and I twirled effortlessly under the glow of a canopy of lights and the bright flashes from the cameras. ââ¬Å"Enjoying the party, Mrs. Cullen?â⬠he whispered in my ear. I laughed. ââ¬Å"That will take a while to get used to.â⬠ââ¬Å"We have a while,â⬠he reminded me, his voice exultant, and he leaned down to kiss me while we danced. Cameras clicked feverishly. The music changed, and Charlie tapped on Edward's shoulder. It wasn't nearly as easy to dance with Charlie. He was no better at it than I was, so we moved safely from side to side in a tiny square formation. Edward and Esme spun around us like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. ââ¬Å"I'm going to miss you at home, Bella. I'm already lonely.â⬠I spoke through a tight throat, trying to make a joke of it. ââ¬Å"I feel just horrible, leaving you to cook for yourself ââ¬â it's practically criminal negligence. You could arrest me.â⬠He grinned. ââ¬Å"I suppose I'll survive the food. Just call me whenever you can.â⬠ââ¬Å"I promise.â⬠It seemed like I danced with everyone. It was good to see all my old friends, but I really wanted to be with Edward more than anything else. I was happy when he finally cut in, just half a minute after a new dance started. ââ¬Å"Still not that fond of Mike, eh?â⬠I commented as Edward whirled me away from him. ââ¬Å"Not when I have to listen to his thoughts. He's lucky I didn't kick him out. Or worse.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, right.â⬠ââ¬Å"Have you had a chance to look at yourself?â⬠ââ¬Å"Urn. No, I guess not. Why?â⬠ââ¬Å"Then I suppose you don't realize how utterly, heart-breakingly beautiful you are tonight. I'm not surprised Mike's having difficulty with improper thoughts about a married woman. I am disappointed that Alice didn't make sure you were forced to look in a mirror.â⬠ââ¬Å"You are very biased, you know.â⬠He sighed and then paused and turned me around to face the house. The wall of glass reflected the party back like a long mirror. Edward pointed to the couple in the mirror directly across from us. ââ¬Å"Biased, am I?â⬠I caught just a glimpse of Edward's reflection ââ¬â a perfect duplicate of his perfect face ââ¬â with a dark-haired beauty at his side. Her skin was cream and roses, her eyes were huge with excitement and framed with thick lashes. The narrow sheath of the shimmering white dress flared out subtly at the train almost like an inverted calla lily, cut so skillfully that her body looked elegant and graceful ââ¬â while it was motionless, at least. Before I could blink and make the beauty turn back into me, Edward suddenly stiffened and turned automatically in the other direction, as if someone had called his name. ââ¬Å"Oh!â⬠he said. His brow furrowed for an instant and then smoothed out just as quickly. Suddenly, he was smiling a brilliant smile. ââ¬Å"What is it?â⬠I asked. ââ¬Å"A surprise wedding gift.â⬠ââ¬Å"Huh?â⬠He didn't answer; he just started dancing again, spinning me the opposite way we'd been headed before, away from the lights and then into the deep swath of night that ringed the luminous dance floor. He didn't pause until we reached the dark side of one of the huge cedars. Then Edward looked straight into the blackest shadow. ââ¬Å"Thank you,â⬠Edward said to the darkness. ââ¬Å"This is veryâ⬠¦ kind of you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Kind is my middle name,â⬠a husky familiar voice answered from the black night. ââ¬Å"Can i cut in?â⬠My hand flew up to my throat, and if Edward hadn't been holding me I would have collapsed. ââ¬Å"Jacob!â⬠I choked as soon as I could breathe. ââ¬Å"Jacob!â⬠ââ¬Å"Hey there, Bells.â⬠I stumbled toward the sound of his voice. Edward kept his grip under my elbow until another set of strong hands caught me in the darkness. The heat from Jacob's skin burned right through the thin satin dress as he pulled me close. He made no effort to dance; he just hugged me while I buried my face in his chest. He leaned down to press his cheek to the top of my head. ââ¬Å"Rosalie won't forgive me if she doesn't get her official turn on the dance floor,â⬠Edward murmured, and I knew he was leaving us, giving me a gift of his own ââ¬â this moment with Jacob. ââ¬Å"Oh, Jacob.â⬠I was crying now; I couldn't get the words out clearly. ââ¬Å"Thank you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Stop blubbering,Bella. You'll ruin your dress. It's just me.â⬠ââ¬Å"Just? Oh, Jake! Everything is perfect now.â⬠Hesnorted. ââ¬Å"Yeah ââ¬â the party can start. The best man finally made it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Now everyone I love is here.â⬠I felthis lips brush my hair. ââ¬Å"SorryI'm late, honey.â⬠ââ¬Å"I'm just so happy you came!â⬠ââ¬Å"That was the idea.â⬠I glanced toward the guests, but I couldn't see through the dancers to the spot where I'd last seen Jacob's father. I didn't know if he'd stayed. ââ¬Å"DoesBilly know you're here?â⬠As soon as I asked, I knew that he must have ââ¬â it was the only way to explain his uplifted expression before. ââ¬Å"I'm sure Sam's told him. I'll go see him whenâ⬠¦ when the party's over.â⬠ââ¬Å"He'll beso glad you're home.â⬠Jacob pulled back a little bit and straightened up.He left one hand on the small of my back and grabbed my right hand with the other. He cradled our hands to his chest; I could feel his heart beat under my palm, and I guessed that he hadn't placed my hand there accidentally. ââ¬Å"I don't know if I get more than just this one dance,â⬠he said, and he began pulling me around in a slow circle that didn't match the tempo of the music coming from behind us. ââ¬Å"I'd better make the best of it.â⬠We moved to the rhythm of his heart under my hand. ââ¬Å"I'm glad Icame,â⬠Jacob said quietly after a moment. ââ¬Å"I didn't think I would be. But it's good to see youâ⬠¦ one more time. Not as sad as I'd thought it would be.â⬠ââ¬Å"I don't want you to feel sad.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know that. And I didn't come tonight to make you feel guilty.â⬠ââ¬Å"No ââ¬â it makes me very happy that you came. It's the best gift you could have given me.â⬠He laughed. ââ¬Å"That's good, because I didn't have time to stop for a real present.â⬠My eyes were adjusting, and I could see his face now, higher up than I expected. Was it possible that he was still growing? He had to be closer to seven feet than to six. It was a relief to see his familiar features again after all this time ââ¬â his deep-set eyes shadowed under his shaggy black brows, his high cheekbones, his full lips stretched over his bright teeth in the sarcastic smile that matched his tone. His eyes were tight around the edges ââ¬â careful; I could see that he was being very careful tonight. He was doing all he could to make me happy, to not slip and show how much this cost him. I'd never done anything good enough to deserve a friend like Jacob. ââ¬Å"When did you decide to come back?â⬠ââ¬Å"Consciously or subconsciously?â⬠He took a deep breath before he answered his own question. ââ¬Å"I don't really know. I guess I've been wandering back this direction for a while, and maybe it's because I was headed here. But it wasn't until this morning that I really started running. I didn't know if I could make it.â⬠He laughed. ââ¬Å"You wouldn't believe how weird this feels ââ¬â walking around on two legs again. And clothes! And then it's more bizarre because it feels weird. I didn't expect that. I'm out of practice with the whole human thing.â⬠We revolved steadily. ââ¬Å"It would have been a shame to miss seeing you like this, though. That's worth the trip right there. You look unbelievable, Bella. So beautiful.â⬠ââ¬Å"Alice invested a lot of time in me today. The dark helps, too.â⬠ââ¬Å"It's not so dark for me, you know.â⬠ââ¬Å"Right.â⬠Werewolf senses. It was easy to forget all the things he could do, he seemed so human. Especially right now. ââ¬Å"You cut your hair,â⬠I noted. ââ¬Å"Yeah. Easier, you know. Thought I'd better take advantage of the hands.â⬠ââ¬Å"It looks good,â⬠I lied. He snorted. ââ¬Å"Right. I did it myself, with rusty kitchen shears.â⬠He grinned widely for a moment, and then his smile faded. His expression turned serious. ââ¬Å"Are you happy, Bella?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes.â⬠ââ¬Å"Okay.â⬠I felt his shoulders shrug. ââ¬Å"That's the main thing, I guess.â⬠ââ¬Å"How are you, Jacob? Really?â⬠ââ¬Å"I'm fine, Bella, really. You don't need to worry about me anymore. You can stop bugging Seth.â⬠ââ¬Å"I'm not just bugging him because of you. I like Seth.â⬠ââ¬Å"He's a good kid. Better company than some. I tell you, if I could get rid of the voices in my head, being a wolf would be about perfect.â⬠I laughed at the way it sounded. ââ¬Å"Yeah, I can't get mine to shut up, either.â⬠ââ¬Å"In your case, that would mean you're insane. Of course, I already knew that you were insane,â⬠he teased. ââ¬Å"Thanks.â⬠ââ¬Å"Insanity is probably easier than sharing a pack mind. Crazy people's voices don't send babysitters to watch them.â⬠ââ¬Å"Huh?â⬠ââ¬Å"Sam's out there. And some of the others. Just in case, you know.â⬠ââ¬Å"In case of what?â⬠ââ¬Å"In case I can't keep it together, something like that. In case I decide to trash the party.â⬠He flashed a quick smile at what was probably an appealing thought to him. ââ¬Å"But I'm not here to ruin your wedding, Bella. I'm here to .. .â⬠He trailed off. ââ¬Å"To make it perfect.â⬠ââ¬Å"That's a tall order.â⬠ââ¬Å"Good thing you're so tall.â⬠He groaned at my bad joke and then sighed. ââ¬Å"I'm just here to be your friend. Your best friend, one last time.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sam should give you more credit.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, maybe I'm being oversensitive. Maybe they'd be here anyway, to keep an eye on Seth. There are a lot of vampires here. Seth doesn't take that as seriously as he should.â⬠ââ¬Å"Seth knows that he's not in any danger. He understands the Cullens better than Sam does.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sure, sure,â⬠Jacob said, making peace before it could turn into a fight. It was strange to have him being the diplomat. ââ¬Å"Sorry about those voices,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Wish I could make it better.â⬠In so many ways. ââ¬Å"It's not that bad. I'm just whining a little.â⬠ââ¬Å"You'reâ⬠¦ happy?â⬠ââ¬Å"Close enough. But enough about me. You're the star today.â⬠He chuckled. ââ¬Å"I bet you're just loving that. Center of attention.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah. Can't get enough attention.â⬠He laughed and then stared over my head. With pursed lips, he studied the shimmering glow of the reception party, the graceful whirl of the dancers, the fluttering petals falling from the garlands; I looked with him. It all seemed very distant from this black, quiet space. Almost like watching the white flurries swirling inside a snow globe. ââ¬Å"I'll give them this much,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"They know how to throw a party.â⬠ââ¬Å"Alice is an unstoppable force of nature.â⬠He sighed. ââ¬Å"Song's over. Do you think 1 get another one? Or is that asking too much?â⬠I tightened my hand around his. ââ¬Å"You can have as many dances as you want.â⬠He laughed. ââ¬Å"That would be interesting. I think I'd better stick with two, though. Don't want to start talk.â⬠We turned in another circle. ââ¬Å"You'd think I'd be used to telling you goodbye by now,â⬠he murmured. I tried to swallow the lump in my throat, but I couldn't force it down. Jacob looked at me and frowned. He wiped his fingers across my cheek, catching the tears there. ââ¬Å"You're not supposed to be the one crying, Bella.â⬠ââ¬Å"Everyone cries at weddings,â⬠I said thickly. ââ¬Å"This is what you want, right?â⬠ââ¬Å"Right.â⬠ââ¬Å"Then smile.â⬠I tried. He laughed at my grimace. Tm going to try to remember you like this. Pretend thatâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"That what? That I died?â⬠He clenched his teeth. He was struggling with himself ââ¬â with his decision to make his presence here a gift and not a judgment. I could guess what he wanted to say. ââ¬Å"No,â⬠he finally answered. ââ¬Å"But I'll see you this way in my head. Pink cheeks. Heartbeat. Two left feet. All of that.â⬠I deliberately stomped on his foot as hard as I could. He smiled. ââ¬Å"That's my girl.â⬠He started to say something else and then snapped his mouth closed. Struggling again, teeth gritted against the words he didn't want to say. My relationship with Jacob used to be so easy. Natural as breathing. But since Edward had come back into my life, it was a constant strain. Because ââ¬â in Jacob's eyes ââ¬â by choosing Edward, I was choosing a fate that was worse than death, or at least equivalent to it. ââ¬Å"What is it, Jake? Just tell me. You can tell me anything.â⬠ââ¬Å"I ââ¬â Iâ⬠¦ I don't have anything to tell you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh please. Spit it out.â⬠ââ¬Å"It's true. It's notâ⬠¦ it's ââ¬â it's a question. It's something I want you to tell meâ⬠ââ¬Å"Ask me.â⬠He struggled for another minute and then exhaled. ââ¬Å"I shouldn't. It doesn't matter. I'm just morbidly curious.â⬠Because I knew him so well, I understood. ââ¬Å"It's not tonight, Jacob,â⬠I whispered. Jacob was even more obsessed with my humanity than Edward. He treasured every one of my heartbeats, knowing that they were numbered. ââ¬Å"Oh,â⬠he said, trying to smother his relief. ââ¬Å"Oh.â⬠A new song started playing, but he didn't notice the change this time. ââ¬Å"When?â⬠he whispered. ââ¬Å"I don't know for sure. A week or two, maybe.â⬠His voice changed, took on a defensive, mocking edge. ââ¬Å"What's the holdup?â⬠ââ¬Å"I just didn't want to spend my honeymoon writhing in pain.â⬠ââ¬Å"You'd rather spend it how? Playing checkers? Ha ha.â⬠ââ¬Å"Very funny.â⬠ââ¬Å"Kidding, Bells. But, honestly, I don't see the point. You can't have a real honeymoon with your vampire, so why go through the motions? Call a spade a spade. This isn't the first time you've put this off. That's a good thing, though,â⬠he said, suddenly earnest. ââ¬Å"Don't be embarrassed about it.â⬠ââ¬Å"I'm not putting anything off,â⬠I snapped. ââ¬Å"And yes I can have a real honeymoon! I can do anything I want! Butt out!â⬠He stopped our slow circling abruptly. For a moment, I wondered if he'd finally noticed the music change, and I scrambled in my head for a way to patch up our little tiff before he said goodbye to me. We shouldn't part on this note. And then his eyes bulged wide with a strange kind of confused horror. ââ¬Å"What?â⬠he gasped. ââ¬Å"What did you say?â⬠ââ¬Å"About whatâ⬠¦ ? Jake? What's wrong?â⬠ââ¬Å"What do you mean? Have a real honeymoon? While you're still human? Are you kidding? That's a sick joke, Bella!â⬠I glared at him. ââ¬Å"I said butt out, Jake. This is so not your business. I shouldn't haveâ⬠¦ we shouldn't even be talking about this. It's private ââ¬â ââ¬Å" His enormous hands gripped the tops of my arms, wrapping all the way around, fingers overlapping. ââ¬Å"Ow, Jake! Let go!â⬠He shook me. ââ¬Å"Bella! Have you lost your mind? You can't be that stupid! Tell me you're joking!â⬠He shook me again. His hands, tight as tourniquets, were quivering, sending vibrations deep into my bones. ââ¬Å"Jake ââ¬â stop!â⬠The darkness was suddenly very crowded. ââ¬Å"Take your hands off her!â⬠Edward's voice was cold as ice, sharp as razors. Behind Jacob, there was a low snarl from the black night, and then another, overlapping the first. ââ¬Å"Jake, bro, back away,â⬠I heard Seth Clearwater urge. ââ¬Å"You're losing it.â⬠Jacob seemed frozen as he was, his horrified eyes wide and staring. ââ¬Å"You'll hurt her,â⬠Seth whispered. ââ¬Å"Let her go.â⬠ââ¬Å"Now!â⬠Edward snarled. Jacob's hands dropped to his sides, and the sudden gush of blood through my waiting veins was almost painful. Before I could register more than that, cold hands replaced the hot ones, and the air was suddenly whooshing past me. I blinked, and I was on my feet a half dozen feet away from where I'd been standing. Edward was tensed in front of me. There were two enormous wolves braced between him and Jacob, but they did not seem aggressive to me. More like they were trying to prevent the fight. And Seth ââ¬â gangly, fifteen-year-old Seth ââ¬â had his long arms around Jacob's shaking body, and he was tugging him away. If Jacob phased with Seth so closeâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"C'mon, Jake. Let's go.â⬠ââ¬Å"I'll kill you,â⬠Jacob said, his voice so choked with rage that it was low as a whisper. His eyes, focused on Edward, burned with fury. ââ¬Å"I'll kill you myself! I'll do it now!â⬠He shuddered convulsively. The biggest wolf, the black one, growled sharply. ââ¬Å"Seth, get out of the way,â⬠Edward hissed. Seth tugged on Jacob again. Jacob was so bewildered with rage that Seth was able to yank him a few feet farther back. ââ¬Å"Don't do it, Jake. Walk away. C'mon.â⬠Sam ââ¬â the bigger wolf, the black one ââ¬â joined Seth then. He put his massive head against Jacob's chest and shoved. The three of them ââ¬â Seth towing, Jake trembling, Sam pushing ââ¬â disappeared swiftly into the darkness. The other wolf stared after them. I wasn't sure, in the weak light, about the color of his fur ââ¬â chocolate brown, maybe? Was it Quil, then? Tm sorry,â⬠I whispered to the wolf. ââ¬Å"It'sall right now,Bella,â⬠Edward murmured. The wolf looked at Edward. His gaze was not friendly. Edward gave him one cold nod.The wolf huffed and then turned to follow the others, vanishing as they had. ââ¬Å"All right,â⬠Edward said to himself, and then he looked at me. ââ¬Å"Let's get back.â⬠ââ¬Å"But Jake ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Sam has him in hand. He's gone.â⬠ââ¬Å"Edward, I'm so sorry. Iwas stupid ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"You did nothing wrong ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"I have such a big mouth! Why would Iâ⬠¦ I shouldn't have let him get to me like that. What was I thinking?â⬠ââ¬Å"Don't worry.â⬠He touched my face. ââ¬Å"We need to get back to the reception before someone notices our absence.â⬠I shook my head, trying to reorient myself. Before someone noticed? Had anyone missed that? Then, as I thought about it, I realized the confrontation that had seemed so catastrophic to me had, in reality, been very quiet and short here in the shadows. ââ¬Å"Give me two seconds,â⬠I pleaded. My insides were chaotic with panic and grief, but that didn't matter ââ¬â only the outside mattered right now. Putting on a good show was something I knew I had to master. ââ¬Å"My dress?â⬠ââ¬Å"You look fine. Not a hair out of place.â⬠I took two deep breaths. ââ¬Å"Okay. Let's go.â⬠He put his arms around me and led me back to the light. When we passed under the twinkle lights, he spun me gently onto the dance floor. We melted in with the other dancers as if our dance had never been interrupted. I glanced around at the guests, butno one seemed shocked or frightened. Only the very palest faces there showed any signs of stress, and they hid it well. Jasper and Emmett were on the edge of the floor, close together, and I guessed that they had been nearby during the confrontation. ââ¬Å"Are you ââ¬â ââ¬Å" Tm fine,â⬠I promised. ââ¬Å"I can't believe I did that. What's wrong with me?â⬠ââ¬Å"Nothing is wrong with youâ⬠I'd been so glad to see Jacob here. I knew the sacrifice it had taken him. And then I'd ruined it, turned his gift into a disaster. I should be quarantined. But my idiocy would not ruin anything else tonight. I would put this away, shove it in a drawer and lock it up to deal with later. There would be plenty of time to flagellate myself for this, and nothing I could do now would help. ââ¬Å"It's over,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Let's not think of it again tonight.â⬠I expected a quick agreement from Edward, but he was silent. ââ¬Å"Edward?â⬠He closed his eyes and touched his forehead to mine. ââ¬Å"Jacob is right,â⬠he whispered. ââ¬Å"What am I thinking?â⬠ââ¬Å"He is not.â⬠I tried to keep my face smooth for the watching crowd of friends. ââ¬Å"Jacob is way too prejudiced to see anything clearly.â⬠He mumbled something low that sounded almost like ââ¬Å"should let him kill me for even thinking â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"Stop it,â⬠I said fiercely. I grabbed his face in my hands and waited until he opened his eyes. ââ¬Å"You and me. That's the only thing that matters. The only thing you're allowed to think about now. Do you hear me?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠he sighed. ââ¬Å"Forget Jacob came.â⬠I could do that. I would 60 that. ââ¬Å"For me. Promise that you'll let this go.â⬠He stared into my eyes for a moment before answering. ââ¬Å"I promise.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thank you. Edward, I'm not afraid.â⬠ââ¬Å"I am,â⬠he whispered. ââ¬Å"Don't be.â⬠I took deep breath and smiled. ââ¬Å"By the way, I love you.â⬠He smiled just a little in return. ââ¬Å"That's why we're here.â⬠ââ¬Å"You're monopolizing the bride,â⬠Emmett said, coming up behind Edward's shoulder. ââ¬Å"Let me dance with my little sister. This could be my last chance to make her blush.â⬠He laughed loudly, as unaffected as he usually was by any serious atmosphere. It turned out there were actually lots of people I hadn't danced with yet, and that gave me a chance to truly compose and resolve myself. When Edward claimed me again, I found that the Jacob-drawer was shut nice and tight. As he wrapped his arms around me, I was able to unearth my earlier sense of joy, my certainty that everything in my life was in the right place tonight. I smiled and laid my head against his chest. His arms tightened. ââ¬Å"I could get used to this,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Don't tell me you've gotten over your dancing issues?â⬠ââ¬Å"Dancing isn't so bad ââ¬â with you. But I was thinking more of this,â⬠ââ¬â and I pressed myself to him even tighter ââ¬â ââ¬Å"of never having to let you go.â⬠ââ¬Å"Never,â⬠he promised, and he leaned down to kiss me. It was a serious kind of kiss ââ¬â intense, slow but buildingâ⬠¦. I'd pretty much forgotten where I was when I heard Alice call, ââ¬Å"Bella! It's time!â⬠I felt a brief flicker of irritation with my new sister for the interruption. Edward ignored her; his lips were hard against mine, more urgent than before. My heart broke into a sprint and my palms were slick against his marble neck. ââ¬Å"Do you want to miss your plane?â⬠Alice demanded, right next to me now. ââ¬Å"I'm sure you'll have a lovely honeymoon camped out in the airport waiting for another flight.â⬠Edward turned his face slightly to murmur, ââ¬Å"Go away, Alice,â⬠and then pressed his lips to mine again. ââ¬Å"Bella, do you want to wear that dress on the airplane?â⬠she demanded. I wasn't really paying much attention. At the moment, I simply didn't care. Alice growled quietly. ââ¬Å"I'll tell her where you're taking her, Edward. So help me, I will.â⬠He froze. Then he lifted his face from mine and glared at his favorite sister. ââ¬Å"You're awfully small to be so hugelyirritating.â⬠ââ¬Å"I didn't pick out the perfect going-away dress to have it wasted,â⬠she snapped back, taking my hand. ââ¬Å"Come with me, Bella.â⬠I tugged against her hold, stretching up on my toes to kiss him one more time. She jerked my arm impatiently, hauling me away from him. There were a few chuckles from the watching guests. I gave up then and let her lead me into the empty house. She looked annoyed. ââ¬Å"Sorry, Alice,â⬠I apologized. ââ¬Å"I don't blame you, Bella.â⬠She sighed. ââ¬Å"You don't seem to be able help yourself.â⬠I giggled at her martyred expression, and she scowled. ââ¬Å"Thank you, Alice. It was the most beautiful wedding anyone ever had,â⬠I told her earnestly. ââ¬Å"Everything was exactly right. You're the best, smartest, most talented sister in the whole world.â⬠That thawed her out; she smiled a huge smile. ââ¬Å"I'm glad you liked it.â⬠Renee and Esme were waiting upstairs. The three of them quickly had me out of my dress and into Alice's deep blue going-away ensemble. I was grateful when someone pulled the pins out of my hair and let it fall loose down my back, wavy from the braids, saving me from a hairpin headache later. My mother's tears streamed without a break the entire time. ââ¬Å"I'll call you when I know where I'm going,â⬠I promised as I hugged her goodbye. I knew the honeymoon secret was probably driving her crazy; my mother hated secrets, unless she was in on them. ââ¬Å"I'll tell you as soon as she's safely away,â⬠Alice outdid me, smirking at my wounded expression. How unfair, for me to be the last to know. ââ¬Å"You have to visit me and Phil very, very soon. It's your turn to go south ââ¬â see the sun for once,â⬠Renee said. ââ¬Å"It didn't rain today,â⬠I reminded her, avoiding her request ââ¬Å"A miracle.â⬠ââ¬Å"Everything's ready,â⬠Alice said. ââ¬Å"Your suitcases are in the car ââ¬â Jasper's bringing it around.â⬠She pulled me back toward the stairs with Renee following, still halfway embracing me. ââ¬Å"I love you, Mom,â⬠I whispered as we descended. Tm so glad you have Phil. Take care of each other.â⬠ââ¬Å"I love you, too, Bella, honey.â⬠ââ¬Å"Goodbye, Mom. I love you,â⬠I said again, my throat thick. Edward was waiting at the bottom of the stairs. I took his outstretched hand but leaned away, scanning the little crowd that was waiting to see us off. ââ¬Å"Dad?â⬠I asked, my eyes searching. ââ¬Å"Over here,â⬠Edward murmured. He pulled me through the guests; they made a pathway for us. We found Charlie leaning awkwardly against the wall behind everyone else, looking a little like he was hiding. The red rims around his eyes explained why. ââ¬Å"Oh, Dad!â⬠I hugged him around the waist, tears streaming again ââ¬â I was crying so much tonight. He patted my back. ââ¬Å"There, now. You don't want to miss your plane.â⬠It was hard to talk about love with Charlie ââ¬â we were so much alike, always reverting to trivial things to avoid embarrassing emotional displays. But this was no time for being self-conscious. ââ¬Å"I love you forever, Dad,â⬠I told him. ââ¬Å"Don't forget that.â⬠ââ¬Å"You, too, Bells. Always have, always will.â⬠I kissed his cheek at the same time that he kissed mine. ââ¬Å"Call me,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Soon,â⬠I promised, knowing this was all I could promise. Just a phone call. My father and my mother could not be allowed to see me again; I would be too different, and much, much too dangerous. ââ¬Å"Go on, then,â⬠he said gruffly. ââ¬Å"Don't want to be late.â⬠The guests made another aisle for us. Edward pulled me close to his side as we made our escape. ââ¬Å"Are you ready?â⬠he asked. ââ¬Å"I am,â⬠I said, and I knew that it was true. Everyone applauded when Edward kissed me on the doorstep. Then he rushed me to the car as the rice storm began. Most of it went wide, but someone, probably Emmett, threw with uncanny precision, and I caught a lot of the ricochets off Edward's back. The car was decorated with more flowers that trailed in streamers along its length, and long gossamer ribbons that were tied to a dozen shoes ââ¬â designer shoes that looked brand-new ââ¬â dangling behind the bumper. Edward shielded me from the rice while I climbed in, and then he was in and we were speeding away as I waved out the window and called ââ¬Å"I love youâ⬠to the porch, where my families waved back. The last image I registered was one of my parents. Phil had both arms wrapped tenderly around Renee. She had one arm tight around his waist but had her free hand reached out to hold Charlie's. So many different kinds of love, harmonious in this one moment. It seemed a very hopeful picture to me. Edward squeezed my hand. ââ¬Å"I love you,â⬠he said. I leaned my head against his arm. ââ¬ËThat's why we're here,â⬠I quoted him. He kissed my hair. As we turned onto the black highway and Edward really hit the accelerator, I heard a noise over the purr of the engine, coming from the forest behind us. If I could hear it, then he certainly could. But he said nothing as the sound slowly faded in the distance. I said nothing, either. The piercing, heartbroken howling grew fainter and then disappeared entirely.

Benefits of Medical Marijuana Essay
Marijuana is perhaps one of the most controversial herbs rendered illegal by United States laws. Several sectors in the society advocate for the legalization of marijuana. These arguments usually point out to the medical benefits that marijuana contains. The supposed medical benefits of marijuana have been scrutinized by several scientific researchers and some of these claims have been supported by studies. By looking objectively at these medical claims can help people be more aware of the facts and the actual benefits that marijuana offers if there are any. Medical Benefits of Marijuana Medical marijuana, according to some studies can help relieve pain, nausea and muscle spasms. Although these illnesses may be simple symptoms of more serious diseases, they are being experienced by a number of patients that are suffering from hepatitis and cancer among others. In this regard, medical marijuana can be a cheaper alternative for the treatment of these medical conditions (Legal Reefer, 2004). Another medical condition that marijuana can help treat is glaucoma, which impairs the vision because of intra-ocular pressure damage. The reason behind this is that marijuana helps relieve the pressure felt in the eyes, thereby preventing glaucoma from worsening and leading to eventual blindness. Glaucoma, interestingly, is the leading cause of blindness in the United States. With the use of marijuana, therefore, this cause of blindness can be mitigated and more people can cherish their sight for a longer time in their lives. Glaucoma and the pain associated with it can be relieved with marijuana (Legal Reefer, 2004). Other illnesses that marijuana helps treat includes tremors, unsteady gait, muscle pain, multiple sclerosis and spasms. Multiple sclerosis is one of the most debilitating neurological illnesses that afflict young adults in the US. With the help of marijuana, those who are suffering from epileptic seizures also find help. Arthritis, dysmenorrheal, depression and migraines also benefit from treatment with marijuana. The Legal Reefer (2004) reports that some courts and agencies of the US government have verified these findings. Two compounds, Cannabidiol and Caryophyllene, are present in medical marijuana. These two compounds are responsible for the medical effects of marijuana. Cannabidiol helps relieve inflammation, nausea, inflammation and convulsion (Grlie, 1976). In addition, it also helps inhibit the growth of cancer. Caryophyllene, on the other hand, is responsible for reducing tissue inflammation. It usually comes in the form of oil and applied on the inflamed body part (Grlie, 1976). Even if the issue of legalizing marijuana is contentious in the United States, medical practitioners are coming to a consensus that medical marijuana is needed helpful in relieving up to 250 medical conditions. This number is too huge to be ignored by the greater majority in the society. Legalizing Marijuana The literature in support of medical marijuana is robust and continues to grow. Medical marijuana has been shown to aid in the treatment of symptoms for AIDS and cancer. It can also serve as an immuno-modulator and analsgesic. Furthermore, it can help treat asthma and other emotional and bipolar disorders (Lucido, 2008). The American College of Physicians (2008) have also come up with a position paper in support of research concerning medical marijuana and the exemption of medical marijuana from the prosecution of the law. In their paper, the organization cited the health benefits of marijuana in stimulating appetite, in treating glaucoma, neurological and movement disorders and its use as an analgesic. The position of the ACP gives credence to the claims that marijuana can really function as a good medicine. The ACP, however, noted that there are adverse effects associated in marijuana. If smoked, marijuana can increase the heart rate of the user and help decrease the blood pressure. In addition to this, there are other psychoactive effects that are of a more serious nature. These may be manifested in short-term memory impairment, reduction of motor skills, attention and reaction times. There may also be some difficulties in organizing and processing information given to the one who used marijuana. These effects are more severe for those who orally take medical marijuana. So this is certainly an adverse effect that should be carefully taken into account in the case that marijuana is approved as a medicine (Joy, Watson & Benson, 1999). Smoked marijuana also has important adverse effects similar to tobacco. If marijuana is smoked on a regular basis, it can help induce cancer, lung problems, pregnancy problems and even bacterial pneumonia. When taken orally, medical marijuana has less lethal toxicity than other psychoactive drugs being used in the world today. Since medical marijuana will not be prescribed for smoking, then the dangers posed by the adverse effects will be mitigated and will be contained. In fact, these adverse effects are also within the acceptable range of effects present in other forms of medication. Marijuana: To Legalize or to Remain Illegal? With the support of the ACP for the continuation of research for the medical implications of marijuana. With such support, the impetus for legalization will be picked up by those who are advocating for the legalization of marijuana. Another reason why people are pushing for the legalization of marijuana is the perceived economic benefits that it will bring to the government. Marijuana has often been compared with alcohol, which also have harmful contents but is being allowed to be marketed all over the country. If the government could legalize it, then it can derive huge revenues from the taxes and sales derived from marijuana. As it stands now, it is illegal. So the ones who benefit from the marijuana trade are the black market and organized criminals (Gerber & Sperling, 2004). Marijuana is similar to alcohol and tobacco. The major difference is that marijuana offers therapeutic and medicinal effects while tobacco does not and alcohol only helps enhance health minimally. According to Herer and Cabarga (1998), those who are getting rich through the black market want it to remain illegal because if it becomes legal, the money will then have to be transferred to the hands of the government. Conclusion What is needed now is to strike the right balance between maximizing the medicinal effects while mitigating the negative effects of marijuana. The answer to the question of legalization would be a controlled legalization. Marijuana could be used for medicinal purposes and alternative treatment. This means that it would have to be recommended by licensed physicians and that there should be a regulation in using it in the same way that certain narcotic pain killers are regulated in the market. Marijuana should not be offered as an over-the-counter medicine or offered like tobacco or alcohol as this would only make the negative effects of marijuana more prevalent in the society. With government legislation and strict implementation of the law, the medicinal values of marijuana would be used by society while its negative effects would be avoided. Just A Pot Of Basil
At the age of eight one of my favorite things to do was dream about living in a time where gigantic beasts loomed over the earth. Form the gigantasaurus to the brontosaurus I enjoyed anything from the Precambrian period. I grew to appreciate the monstrous creatures even more after I took my first trip to the Carnegie Museum of Pittsburgh. I had never seen such elaborate displays of marvelous full-scale dinosaurs, since I was accustomed to seeing them no larger than the height of a book or television screen. I recall roaming through the many displays pretending that I was one of them. Usually, I pretended to be the Troodon, a species that is thought to have the largest brain in proportion to the rest of its body. Even though I was smaller than the rest of the dinosaurs, I always knew that I could outsmart them if I was a clever Troodon. Of course I would forget that they had been extinct for millions of years, as the plaques in front of the enormous exhibits reminded those who were tall enough to read them. But I carried on in my world of dinosaurs while I was in the museum, free to dream as I cared to. The distance and time between the real dinosaurs and I disappeared when I was in the museum, in my little world. Therein lies the significant difference between seeing and imagining, and being told or influenced, that is, being mystified. Mystification, as the art critic John Berger in Ways of Seeing explains, is the process of explaining away what might otherwise be evident (Berger 112). I was instantly captivated from the moment I saw the tied-together skeletons stretching as high as my own house; should I have cared about the petty details that would have distracted me from my own imagination? Original paintings are silent and still in a sense that information never is (Berger 125). The skeletal remains of ancient beasts strung up give only a portion of what such creatures really were millions of years ago. The color of their skin, the texture of their bodies, or even the size of their internal organs are just a few of the endless questions that remain unanswered, lost over time. But museums give something more than any book could ever tell, and that is the real life experience of seeing what could never be perceived otherwise. When life breathed through the dinosaurs they were never frozen into a perfect stance like they are portrayed in museums. Our imagination allows us to fathom what it really may have been like, but the past remains where it is, and can only at its best be relived in movies or museums or our imagination. Museums have never made me feel awkward or uneasy, they come as second nature to me. I enjoy being enveloped by a different emotion each time I look at the skeleton of a dinosaur, or see a mummified pharaoh, or even a beautiful painting of a landscape. I have always been able to let everything go, and be consumed by a striking or stunning image. The wonderful thing about museums is that every few feet there lies an artist waiting to draw you into their world. Artists and their works contained within a single building span over centuries and continents. All contain different points of view and expresses it to the best of their abilities. Today we see the art of the past as nobody saw it before. We actually perceive it in a different way (Berger 112). History meets in a museum, and constantly forms new accounts through time. Each day that passes we have gained something which may add to our overall perception of the world around us. This is why Berger claims that we see things differently and therefore there exists no definitive account of exactly the way things were at any specific moment in time. It is lost forever, and at best, can only be saved in an altered form. There is something magical about the power of the atmosphere of a museum. The silence is filled with a sea of thoughts running through viewers minds. When I first saw John White Alexander s painting Isabella and the Pot of Basil I was immediately captivated. Even my first glance told me that there was something more to the large pot in the painting than meets the eye. In a painting all its elements are there to be seen simultaneously (Berger 121). What the eye can perceive in an instant may take pages to explain. There lies the beauty of art. One glance at Alexander s work captivated me instantly. There lives some hidden secret inside the woman s soul that lay next to the pot. And sure enough, the small plaque beside the painting described a story that told me that my assumptions were correct. The painting was written as a reflection of a poem written by John Keats. Here, briefly, is the story of Isabella and the Pot of Basil. Isabella had two brothers that expected her to marry a well-endowed man so they could collect a significant dowry from her marriage. But Isabella never married, and fell in love with a carpenter named Lorenzo, who was working for brothers. The two were madly in love, and visited each other frequently whenever they were certain that no one could find them together. Soon though, a brother learned of their secret, and the two brothers took Lorenzo into the woods, killed him, and buried him in a shallow grave. One night while Isabella was wailing in bed over the mysterious disappearance of her supposed runaway love, Lorenzoââ¬â¢s ghost came to her and described the occurrences and location of Lorenzo s body. Isabella went to Lorenzo s grave, cut off his head, and took it back home with her where she put it in a big basil pot and covered it with moss, soil, and basil seeds. She watered the seeds with rose water and her own tears and talked to her basil until it grew incredibly lush. After her brothers stole her basil pot, Isabella died of misery and heartbreak, singing a song about the loss of her basil and love. Alexander was able to condense this entire love story into a single painting. Without having read the 500-line poem or at least having some knowledge of the story, the average viewer would never have guessed that her lover s head was contained in the pot. The emotions contained within Isabella and her sacred pot reach beyond words. The pain that she felt consumed her to the point of her own death, where no words can exist. Depicted in the painting is not just a sad woman, but a woman who is about to die, sick and miserable with heartbreak, love, and loneliness. The meaning of an image is changed according to what one seen immediately beside it or what comes immediately after it. [It] is distributed over the whole context on which it appears (Berger 123). Only after reading the small plaque beside the work and continued research after visiting completed my perception on the almost life sized piece of art. These important clues added to what I could deduce from the painting. Without them I would merely have seen just a pot of basil and a woman lying next to it. History is a mystery that is continually being investigated. Without knowing the past no deductions can be made of the present. Alexander captures Isabella in a moment of perfect stillness. Perhaps she is already dead in the artist s eyes, lying beside her love, their souls reunited. The barren space below the pot could contain the spiritual body of Lorenzo. Alexander seems to have purposefully left the open space on the right side of the painting for his spirit next to her. Isabella has her eyes closed and her hand is gingerly extended. Her two fingertips brush against the side of the pot, as if she s imagining the pot to be his face. Her neck appears slightly extended as if she were giving the curved pot a gentle kiss. The stench that must have emanated from the pot would have been almost unbearable to others, yet somehow the power of love caused Isabella to ignore all reason and sanity as her soul sought for her love and mercy. White flowers contrast with the overall melancholy of the image yet also add just the right touch of beauty, innocence, and peace. There are several of these flowers directly under the pot and another at the base of Isabella s feet. This white represents the purity of their love that was so terribly destroyed by her evil brothers. The tear of her garment on her right shoulder shows her distress and her apathy towards her self-appearance. Isabella s soul can be at ease once she is reunited with her beloved Lorenzo; her physical condition no longer matters. There are of course many other paintings depicting Isabella and the Pot of Basil, but none seemed to capture the emotion as well as Alexander does. His art is powerful, captivating, and entices the viewer to look deeper, to learn more, and to almost feel the emotions raging through the canvas. The moment I saw the painting, I knew that there was more to it. The stillness that Alexander recreates reaches beyond words, and required only the same silence in return. The way we see things is affected by what we know or what we believe When in love, the sight of the beloved has a completeness which no words and no embrace can match (Berger 106). Perhaps my heart goes out to Isabella, for I myself am in love and can reconcile with what she may have felt. Even if Isabella was just a fictional character for both Keats and Alexander the emotional consequence of such a painting is undeniable. The love between a man and a woman knows no end, and its eternity continues through people of all time and nations. Of course we are all granted different perspectives, but there lies a central burning passion about love which can only be depicted as a fraction of its entirety. Thus, love in fact, [closes] the distance between the painting of the picture and one s own looking at it (Berger 125). The research that I completed on Isabella and the Pot of Basil introduced a different and more in depth perspective on the work. Without reading the corresponding poem, I would perhaps have seen only a woman standing next to her favorite pot, and be left to imagine what more was involved. My intuition told me that there was more to the painting than what first met my eye. The observations and assumptions that I made based on the picture and poem are based completely my own deductions and learned assumptions that I have acquired throughout my life. Therefore, if John Berger had looked at this image in the same atmosphere as I did, he could have seen something completely different. Therein lies the truest beauty of art, for art is capable of capturing and recreating a moment lost in time without regard to the opinions of those who will see it. Art is beautiful often because we make it beautiful. Big ugly dinosaurs are certainly not beautiful to most, but to me as an eight-year-old, they most definitely were. Being told what is beautiful and what meaning lies behind a painting is the epitome of mystification. According to Berger this lends [undeserved] authority (121) to the artist. The image now illustrates the sentence (Berger 122). And thus, whatever thoughts a viewer has conjured about a painting or work of art are lost, negated, or skewed, yet it provides a strong basis for interpretation. The painting by Alexander exemplifies the poem by Keats. In many instances, poetry is associated with a visual image, but provides only the framework from which a perception of an image can be formulated. Words help set the tone, yet can never deter from the heart of work. I prefer to say that sentences help to illustrate an image. And John Berger would most certainly agree that there is much more to Alexander s work than just Isabella and a pot of basil.

Engineering Management Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
Engineering Management - Research Paper Example An engineer is supposed to study the principles of engineering management if he wants to become a successful professional in the field of engineering because the increasing competition in the market due to the limitations put up by the scarcity of resources has made it mandatory for the engineers for have a basic knowledge of management and planning strategies which were deemed as unnecessary for the engineers in past. Engineers are supposed to develop a knowledge of financial management, marketing strategies, risk management in addition to project management techniques in order to excel in the field of engineering and this knowledge should be gained before going out in the field (Shainis, Dekom & McVinney, 1995). I got my first experience of working as an engineer when I worked as a chemical engineering intern in a fertilizer plant. My stay at the organization and the plant was very knowledgeable experience as I managed to spend some time in each of the various operational sections of the organization. My knowledge of the various engineering management sessions helped me a lot during the planning and execution of the various projects which were assigned to me during my work at various sections in the organization and I managed to complete all of the projects whether they were related to research, design or operation with great success and thus I realized the importance of the study of engineering principles in order to become a successful engineering professional.

Managing Change Master - Case Study Example Also, measures and ways to monitor the change process will be examined. The project will end with an examination of other change management methods that XYZ aught to have used, and the challenges that the organization may face in the foreseeable future spanning from the next five to ten years and possible contingent solutions to these problems. For change to be successful, commitment is vital. According to Kotter, "Most people won't go on the long march unless they see compelling reasons to do so and the reasons are producing expected results". This question addresses the internal and external forces of change affecting XYZ construction Organisational paradigm according to Johnson & Scholes (1997) are those set of assumptions, beliefs which are rarely talked about, which are not considered problematic and most often managers in an organisation are unlikely to be explicit about it. It reflects the collective experience without which members of an organisation would have to do things their own way in different situations they face (Johnson 1992, Johnson &Scholes 1997). According to Dwyer & Kemp (2000:3), "the forces at work in the environment and the organisations capabilities in coping with these, are made sense of in terms of the individual experience of managers and the collective assumptions within the paradigm". Figure one below summarises the cultural web and the organisational paradigm as construed by Johnson and Scholes (1997 Fig. 2.10, p. 69) These assumptions are more commonly observed in conversations, discussions between the different stakeholders in an organisation (Dwyer & Kemp 2000). In some situations assumptions are deeply embedded in an organisation and its' members that it can only be manifested through peoples action (Dwyer & Kemp 2000). In all, these assumptions, ways of doing things are the backbone of the organisation (Johnson 1992, Johnson &Scholes 1997). In XYZ company, the internal factors affecting the change process as deduced from the case include the poor working relationship, less friendly workers who make cooperation and team work difficult, poor management and the autocratic management style of the previous director. The culture and the taken for granted assumptions were at the

Civil Liberties, Habeas Corpus, and the War on Terror Essay - 11
Civil Liberties, Habeas Corpus, and the War on Terror - Essay Example Jefferson intimated that Americas commitment to democratic tendencies was based on the liberty and protection of an individual under habeas corpus (Gregory, 2013). Habeas corpus is established in the United States constitution in article (1), section (9) and clause (2). The constitution under this article enforces the application of habeas corpus unless there is rebellious tendency or when the scenario poses a threat to the safety of the citizenry. There are only two occasions in history when habeas corpus was suspended. President Abraham Lincoln suspended habeas corpus in 1861 due to the militia conduct and riots in Maryland (The Rutherford Institute, 2015). Secondly, habeas corpus was suspended during the reconstruction due to civil rights violations. The war on terrorism has complicated the status of habeas corpus in the United States (Hafetz, 2011).
